It is crucial artists feel safe within their heads and around their art, so they enjoy the product just as much as they love the process.
To be creative one must be vulnerable. To be vulnerable one must be in touch with his or her emotions, be it pleasant or painful at the cost of one's mental health. Whether an artist loves or loathes the product of a creative process is dependent on the nature of emotions involved in the birth of it.
In 2018, late rapper and singer Juice Wrld recalled hating his own record, Lucid dreams which happened to be his biggest hit that peaked No. 2 on The Billboard Hot 100. Similar to this, teenage pop star Olivia Rodrigo recently stated in her recent documentary film Driving home 2 u that she despised one of her acclaimed titles from her Grammy-nominated album. Many singers, poets, writers, and artists across multiple niches are familiar with this construct. And sadly it is not talked much about due to the mysterious nature of its existence. Which begs the question: is this what they have signed up for? and are we okay with it?
In this world of artistry emotion is the fuel for output and growth. And this is a curse artists obliviously carry along with their creative calling. While this piece may present creativity, to be this curse, it is also a priceless gift. The gift being artists get to connect with fans through their art. They get to share a piece of themselves with a ton of audiences across multiple countries and demographics. However, the curse emerges when the artist realizes he or she has to submit to their emotions to gain inspiration to continue climbing the industrial ladder.
Most artists live and die by their art. It is more than a source of income. It is one outlet they utilize to navigate life and all it entails. To be creative, they must be vulnerable. To be vulnerable they have to feel emotions, the pleasant and the painful ones. Artists tend to shield themselves within their feelings to satiate the endless desire to be creative. Call it creativity or artistry; It feeds on emotions and sometimes, this construct comes across to the consumer as raw, authentic, but for the creator it is detrimental.
That is why we have cases of singers, artists coming out to declare their loath for their songs, books, and characters. Not because the creative product is inherently evil. But because the entire process reminded them of how they had to submit to a negative emotion be it heartbreak, grief, depression, or more.
It is crucial critics, singers, writers, artists and general creatives begin to call out this toxic relationship with artistry and emotions. It is crucial that our artists feel safe within their heads and around their art, so they enjoy the product just as much as they love the process.
