The significant and beautiful impacts of Anime on pop culture

Whether it is the big three Naruto, Dragon Ball, and One Piece or new animes like Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, or Jiu-Jitsu Kaisen, Japanese animations have had a significant influence on pop culture on a global scale.

No doubt Film has played a huge role in shaping society to where it is today. However, these elements mostly come from the west. Originating from Japanese folklore, a new form of art and approach to storytelling continues to dominate mainstream media, creating FOMO(The Fear of Missing Out) within the vast Gen-Z and millennial demographic. What initially seemed like a cinematic product for kids' entertainment has evolved into an unmissable medium for the exhibition of culture, visually appealing pictures, and a tool for telling mature-compelling stories resonant with real-world issues.

Whether it is the big three Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece or new animes like Attack on titan, demon slayer, or Jujutsu Kaisen each of these Japanese animations have had a significant influence on pop culture on a global scale. And here are five of them.

Fashion & Cosplays

For every one anime, there are thousands, if not millions of outfits recreated solely inspired by the characters in these animes. Out of Otakus(religious fans of anime) desire to look like their favourite characters, they purchase Merches, unique fabrics and recreate iconic looks. Cosplaying has become an entire niche of its own, serving as home to millions of videos made by content creators across social media platforms. At the rate of this virality of this industry, fashion stores must include anime sections in their clothing lines.

Language

Although Japanese may come across as a relatively difficult language to learn, for avid fans of anime, they have become accustomed to certain Japanese words they now infuse into everyday conversations. Words like;

  • awaii (かわいい) Definition: Cute、 Adorable.
  • Sugoi (すごい) Definition: Amazing、 great.
  • Senpai (先輩) Definition: Someone who is your senior, most commonly at school or in the workplace.
  • Baka (ばか) Definition: Idiot, stupid.
  • Oniisan (お兄さん) Definition: Older brother
  • Daijōbu (大丈夫) Definition: Okay, good
  • Imōto (妹) Definition: Younger sister
  • Tomodachi (友達) Definition: Friend.

Food

Interesting how the famed Ramen noodles have grown in popularity in restaurants due to their common appearance in multiple anime franchises.

Music

YE recently stated on Twitter that the 1988 cyberpunk animated film Akira is considered one of his favourite movies of all time – this is evident in the music video to his song Stronger. Other Artists including Cruel Santino, with his recent album Sabaru Boys: Final Heaven infuse the love of anime into the song making. Anime has also benefited K-pop and the Asian music industry in general. Blackpink's LISA gave a rendition of Gurenge in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie has gone to become an international hit just as numerous opening anime theme songs.

Hollywood

Anime has revolutionized the film industry. Anime studios like Mapple, Ufotable, Kyoto Animations have introduced a new approach to filmmaking and storytelling that Hollywood movie production studios have begun adopting certain anime elements. A good example is Nickelodeon hit series Avatar: The last air bender, and 2001's Spirited Away, which won the best animated feature at the 75th Oscar awards ceremony. These constant nods from academy awards and critic forums prove the exemplary model animes have set, can work in western and international film industries.
