Spain finished top of group B to set up a round of 16 clash with Russia who finished second in group A.
Spain took an early lead after a freekick resulted into an own goal by Sergei Ignashevich in the 12th minute, but Russia equalised in the 41st minute when Artem Dzyuba converted a penalty after a penalty by Gerrard Pique.

After a goalless first half Diego Costa was the saviour as he scored what turned out to be the winning goal for Spain in the 54th minute as Spain held on for all three points.

Gerard Pique trolled for Russia penalty
Gerard Pique was trolled on Twitter after his hand ball led to a penalty for Russia in the encounter.
The Barcelona defender did not have may sympathisers following the accidental touch on his hand.

The round of 16 clash between Spain and Russia produced the first extra time of the 2018 FIFA World Cup as both sides were tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes.
The game also produced the first time a fourth substitute if a FIFA World Cup after both sides used their three substitutes in 90 minutes.
Spain to face Croatia/Denmark in quarter-final
The result means the Spain will take on the winners of the game between Croatia and Denmark on Saturday, July 7.
